2024 Summer Internship - Display Art
This summer, Erde offers a unique internship opportunity focused on Display Art, particularly centered around creating a thematic display for Día de los Muertos—a holiday deeply rooted in Southern Arizonan and Mexican culture. As our Display Art Intern, you will design and execute a visual celebration that resonates with the local community and enhances our store’s connection to this rich cultural event. This role combines artistic expression with an exploration of how cultural elements can influence business dynamics and customer engagement.
Job Title: Intern, Display Art
Location: Tubac, AZ (not remote eligible)
Responsibilities:
Design Collaboration: Work closely with the business owner to finalize the design and structural setup of a culturally themed display for Día de los Muertos, following a predefined theme.
Material Selection: Collaborate with the business owner to define the specific materials needed for the display, owner will ensure all necessary resources are procured prior to the commencement of the internship.
Installation: Handle the physical setup of the display, ensuring it aligns with the finalized design and is ready for public viewing.
Documentation and Portfolio Development: Create a detailed, visually appealing professional portfolio documenting the entire process of the display project. Work under the guidance of the business owner, an expert in product process storytelling, to develop a comprehensive presentation from inception to completion.
Retail Exposure: Spend one day each week working at the shop to gain a deep understanding of the business, brand, products, and customer base. This experience is designed to demonstrate the importance of aligning artistic creation with business objectives, teaching the intern how professional artists adapt their personal style to serve a brand’s needs effectively. Tasks during your retail hours may include:
Customer Interaction: Greet and assist customers with enthusiasm, providing knowledgeable insights about our products.
Brand Ambassadorship: Act as an ambassador for Erde, embodying our ethos in every interaction and highlighting our commitment to quality and uniqueness.
Transaction Processing: Handle sales transactions accurately, including cash and credit card operations.
Visual Maintenance: Maintain the store's visual appearance to meet Erde's high standards.
Inventory Management: Manage and restock inventory as necessary to ensure product availability.
Customer Experience: Participate in creating a positive and memorable shopping experience for all visitors.
Administrative Support: Assist with office tasks, including the preparation of marketing materials.
Qualifications:
Educational Background: Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a high school program in Art, Design, Visual Merchandising, or a related field.
Technical Proficiency: Must be familiar with the SketchUp application. Interns will be provided with access to a license and are required to complete training sent to them prior to the start of the internship. Applicants are expected to have a working knowledge of the software prior to the start of the internship.
Artistic Skills: Strong artistic sensibility with an ability to translate concepts into visual displays that align with brand values and effectively tell a 'story'.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential for effectively interacting with customers, collaborating with the business owner during the creative process, receiving feedback, communicating artistic visions, and documenting the project.
Cultural Awareness: A strong understanding of Southern Arizonan and Mexican cultures, particularly as they relate to Día de los Muertos, is required. The intern must research the cultural significance of the holiday to create displays that are meaningful, respectful, and relevant.
Attention to Detail: Keen attention to detail and an ability to work meticulously on visual and spatial arrangements are crucial. Applicants must demonstrate their capability to manage and execute detailed aesthetic elements accurately.
Portfolio Submission: Applicants must submit a portfolio or examples of previous work demonstrating their artistic skills and ability to translate concepts into visual forms. This will help assess their suitability for the role in terms of creativity and execution.
Duration and Compensation:
Duration: The internship will last between 2-3 weeks.
Hours: Interns are expected to work 6 hours per day, 4 days a week.
Compensation: Interns will be compensated at a rate of $18 per hour.
